The Empire of Austenasia is a self-established sovereign order and long-standing creative and recreational national project founded in 2008. It has developed its own Crown, Constitution, government, honours system, territories and national institutions, with participants and communities located in several parts of the world.

Johannes Karl I Augustus is the current Emperor of Austenasia and the sixth person to hold the Austenasian Throne. He was crowned in York on 25 July 2026, bringing the Austenasian Interregnum to an end. He also reigns as King of Angle-Saxons, with the two Crowns held in personal union.

Austenasia is not a single continuous geographical territory. The Empire is made up of geographically dispersed territories and communities administered as part of the Austenasian project, with its participants living in several countries. Its founding territory is Wrythe, in Carshalton, England.

Austenasia was founded on 20 September 2008 by Terry Austen and Jonathan Austen at Wrythe in Carshalton, England. What began as a small project developed over the following eighteen years into an international community with its own monarchy, government, constitutional system and traditions.

Austenasia is widely described as a micronation and participates in the international micronational community. Austenasia maintains its own identity as the Empire of Austenasia, with a Constitution, Crown, government, territories and subjects. Its institutions form part of a creative and recreational project and do not exercise governmental authority recognised by any sovereign state.

Austenasia is organised as a constitutional monarchy under the Constitution of 2026. Emperor Johannes Karl I Augustus serves as Head of State, while the Prime Minister serves as Head of Government and leads the Cabinet. The Senate forms the Empire’s representative legislature, while legislation requires Imperial Assent before becoming law. Austenasia is not recognised as a sovereign state by the United Kingdom, the United Nations or other internationally recognised sovereign states. Its institutions, laws, offices and territorial claims operate within the Austenasian project and do not replace the laws or governmental authority of the recognised countries in which its participants live.

Yes. Austenasia currently accepts applications for subjectship from people interested in joining and contributing to the Empire. Austenasian subjectship is participation in the Austenasian project; it does not provide a passport, immigration or residency rights, or authority to represent the Empire without permission.
